WELCOME TO MOUNT ABU

HOME OF GOD'S AND GODDESSES

Once home to meditating rishi and munis, the legend has it that Mount Abu is home to 33 crore Gods and Goddess. According to the legend the name Abu means son of Himalayas (or Ar-Booda, "the hill of wisdom"), deriving its name from Arbuada - the powerful serpent, which rescued Nandi the sacred bull of Lord Shiva.  Shiva gave Mount Abu the blessing, that all who do it intense spiritual efforts in this mountain would be much fruit with less labour.

ANCIENT PILGRIMAGE PLACE

It is believed that there are still saints meditating in the mountains of Abu.  There are several ancient holy sites in the mountain, which draw spiritual pilgrams from the world over; including the World Heritage site of the Jain Delwara Temple and many other holy places of unique historic and religious significance.

HILL STATION OASIS FOR THE ROYALS

Mountain Abu is the only Hill Station in the Northern Indian State of Rajasthan.  The forest covered, cooler, climate of Mount Abu has always offered a welcome respite from the heat of the desert.  Several Royal families of Rajasthan have their summer palaces here which are open to the public.  Abu was a favourite spot of the British, and their culture, architecture and engineering has also left its mark on the mountain.

A PLACE OF NATURAL BEAUTY

Mount Abu forms a rocky plateau 22 km long by 9 km wide. The highest peak on the mountain is 1,722 m (5,650 ft) above sea level. It is referred to as 'an oasis in the desert' as its heights are home to rivers, lakes, waterfalls and evergreen forests.  There are hiking trails all over the mountain and the views of sunrise and sunset from the mountain top are spectacular and not to be missed.

A WILD LIFE SCANTUARY

The Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1960 and covers 260 km² of the mountain. It serves as an important conservation area and contributes to the ecological balance of the region.  The wild life of the mountain includes Leopards, Sloth Bears, Grey Wolves, Striped Hyaenas, Bengal Foxes, Mongoose, Porpupines and many others.  There are also snakes, reptiles and a wide variety of birds.  Even if you aren’t lucky enough to spot the big members of the Abu wildlife family, you can’t avoid the wide presence of monkeys, buffalo, cows, goats, squirrels and hear the sound of bird song throughout the mountain.

AN ECO-SENSITIVE ZONE

Mount Abu was declared an eco-sensitive zone in 1992.  This step severely restricts new buildings from being made and has helped to protect the forest and its wild-life.  It also  has helped to keep the character of the mountain, and prevent the kind of urban sprawl seen in other tourist beauty spots throughout India.
